So ends our fabulous first month back into the school routine here at Grandma’s House Daycare. We have “soared into a new year” focusing on ourselves as very special creatures and created in the image of our heavenly father, God. God created the heavens and the earth, God created Man to be in the same image as God and named him Adam, God charged Adam to name all the animals and then take care of them, and God created a wife for Adam and her name was Eve.
In math our month has focused on two areas … numbers, number recognition, groups of numbers, chanting numbers and writing/spelling the number “one”. Older children are concentrating on numbers 10-20 and younger children on numbers 1-10. We’ve also focused on shapes, shape attributes, shape puzzles and lots of sorting. This has been a lot of fun for all ages. We’ve not had a lot of papers in this area as most of our math work has been with manipulatives and verbal drills. Hands on learning is essential at this age.
Literacy always provides opportunities for paperwork. We have addressed letters “A”, “B”, “C” and the beginning sounds of “M”. Lots of picture cards and 3-D supporting manipulatives to develop vocabulary for the younger ones and beginning sounds and phonics for the older children. Pre-schoolers have tried their hand at writing letters and numbers and are doing very well for a first month. We have created a “Word Wall” where we put the text version of words we are learning to read and spell. It will be very exciting to see how our “Word Wall” develops this school year. Library books have been a hit with the pre-schoolers. We will rotate books that support the three letters of the alphabet for each month. This month we have had “Apple Annie”, “Benjamin Bunny” and “Cathy Cook” library books.
Science and Art have supported our focus of “self” and other Bible study topics. We’ve examined the body from several angles including our newest addition … our magnetic skeleton now perched on our easel.
Friday was Vance’s last day with us. Only with us a short time but already he won the hearts of everyone. His mom and dad came Friday and took lots of pictures and gave Sandra and I the most beautiful arrangements of lilies. The daycare closer to their home will be lucky recipients of this little cutie.
