What a fabulous week we have had with so many fun activities. On Monday we replanted our window seed terrariums with morning glory seeds. We also enjoyed the beautiful outside and planted our big cookie jar terrariums that now reside on top of one of the toy shelves in the daycare room. We had so much fun with both activities. Of course the big terrariums were quite messy but we do love the messy fun. On Tuesday we had another outside project and planted our vegetable garden. We planted tomato plants, squash plants, pepper plants, onion starts, carrot seeds, pumpkin seeds and marigold seeds. What fun we are going to have as things start to yield yummy edibles. I am really hoping we have luck with our pumpkins for next Halloween.
On Tuesday we had a lot of fun practicing our math skills and small motor skills. Filling a small vegetable basket with small pincher tongs with small plastic veggies is certainly a test in small motor skills. But the children are intrigued with the activity and are learning to use that part of the hand which they will use to hold writing instruments in the years to come. We are up to “8” now in counting and number recognition. The number recognition is, of course, a higher skill level but we I am seeing signs of the benefit of our efforts.
Wednesday was April Fool’s day and we really played a joke of the moms and dads. We painted red spots on everyone’s faces and when the parent came to pick up in the afternoon had lots of fun yelling “surprise, April fools”! We talked about being sick and being well and how we feel during each. But the big hit was the spots and the kids got a great kick out of the joke. Even Ms Sandra and Ms Karen participated. The kids thought that was quite funny that we had spots on our faces, too.
Our Bible stories we have had throughout the week have been leading up to Palm Sunday. Our Easter stories are taken from “The Story of Easter” retold by Gwen Ellis. We had two all day focuses on this event. On Tuesday we learned that the first Passover happened when God’s people left Egypt long ago. After that, God’s people celebrated Passover every year. Luke 19: 28-35 tells us that one year Jesus and His closest followers went to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. Before they got there, Jesus said to his followers, “Go into town and find a young donkey colt. Untie it and bring it to Me. If anyone asks where you are taking it, say ‘The Master needs it.’” When the men got back with the donkey colt, they spread their coats on its back. Jesus climbed on the colt. Why do you suppose Jesus needed that donkey? On Wednesday we learned from Luke 19:36-38 & John 12:12-16 that Jesus rode into town on the back of that donkey just like a king. The donkey started to clippity-clop through the town. People came running. They threw their coats down for the donkey to walk on. They took palm branches and waved them in the air. “Praise God!” they shouted. Some of them remembered the scriptures that said, “Your king is coming … sitting on the colt of a donkey.” They thought Jesus was their king. We made our own palm branches and had so much fun marching around the room singing “Ho Ho Ho Hosanna, Ha Ha Haleluia, He He He He saved me. I’ve got the joy of the Lord!” and “Halelu Halelu Halelu Haleluia, Praise ye the Lord!” Horay, Jesus is coming!
Every Thursday we go to the family room and watch our Early Reading CDs. This had gotten to be a great routine and the kids really like the change of environment. CDs are great and I am incorporating the flash cards into everything we do during the week.On Friday we filled the sensory table up with sand and had oodles of outside fun with this new activity. A continuation for our week of messy play but oh what fun we have had.
Next week will be a short week as I am closed on Friday for Good Friday. On Thursday we will have our annual Easter party and egg hunt. Party and hunt will begin at 3:30. Anyone is welcome to attend. Children need to bring their own basket for hunting eggs. If I could ask each parent to send 6-10 plastic eggs with a treat inside by Wednesday to add to the hunt I would greatly appreciate it.
