Grandma's House Daycare

We have had a glorious Spring week. On Monday we enjoyed our literacy day learning all about the letter “V”. Along with the Beginning Sounds Tubs with miniature volcano, vest, video camera, visor, van and plastic letters, we practiced drawing the two strokes of the “V” over and over. We are also currently doing dot to dot art and drawing straight lines. My goal is to be able to start teaching how to print the letters of the alphabet starting in September so we are getting ready now. I also read two cute stories about Victor the Vulture and Vera Viper’s Valentine giving us lots of opportunities to find “V” things in the pictures. On Tuesday we counted to “8” focusing on number recognition and counting many different objects. We’ve been observing the birds outside in the birdbath and bird feeders and having lots of fun. Coloring sheets to support these various observations tied in nicely. We’ve also been talking about where the various outside animals live and their various habitats. I’m pleased how these children are so very interested in the world around them.

Wednesday was our PURPLE color day. The girls had no problem finding something purple to wear but the boys had some difficulty. I guess purple is almost as difficult as pink for the guys. No problem, though. Everyone was able to bring something for show and tell which is the focus and I thank you all for that. Most show and tells were even purple which was great. And what a treat to have Ava join in with the show and tell fun this month with her purple “lovey” blanket. She is standing extremely well and taking up to seven steps here at daycare. So, not to leave Emma out, we found a purple nesting cup for her to show. She is sitting extremely well and starting to crawl. Everyone seems to like the color purple. I don’t know if it’s the way it sounds as we form the word or if it’s just such a beautiful color but everyone loves purple. We had a really great color day and excited to have the two little ones participate. Next month’s color is black and white so that should be easy to do.

On Thursday we had a fun art day painting rainbows first with brushes and second with our hands. Very pretty. We also watched our Early Reading CD after our afternoon snack.

On Friday we were not able to do our outside listen and tell activity but we were able to have our sensory play with rice, cups, etc. inside at the learning table. Lots of pouring fun and feeling the tiny rice in our hands. We also tried pouring paint in with the rice and watching the colors mix in with the rice. Lots of mess but lots of fun. We watched the rain through the side door and watched a picture of clouds and sky I painted and hung on the fence to bleed down from the real rain looking like rain on the picture.

Also on Friday we helped Ava celebrate her first birthday. Her sweet mommy provided cupcakes, juice boxes and fireman hats. The children loved it. What a treat for all.
